This scholarly exhibition catalogue offers a comprehensive look at artist David McGee’s thirty-year career. Richly illustrated and thoughtfully designed, the publication brings together new scholarship, creative writing, and primary source material to illuminate the depth and breadth of McGee’s artistic practice.

Critical essays by Dr. Katia Zavistovski (exhibition curator) and Dr. Anita N. Bateman (Vice President of Creative Direction at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Art + Culture, Charlotte) situate McGee’s work within broader artistic, literary, and cultural contexts, tracing the formal and thematic threads that run across his expansive oeuvre. A commissioned poem by Dr. Evie Shockley (Zora Neale Hurston Distinguished Professor of English at Rutgers University) pays homage to McGee’s lifelong engagement with the written word. The catalogue also includes a transcribed conversation between McGee and Michelle White (Senior Curator at The Menil Collection, Houston), offering insights into his creative process and influences, as well as a detailed chronology by Mariah Wisniowski (Registrar at Inman Gallery, Houston) highlighting key moments in his life and career.

Designed by award-winning designer and writer Don Quaintance (Public Address Design), this catalogue serves as a lasting record of the exhibition and invites a sustained engagement with McGee’s work beyond the gallery walls.
