About the Program
In conjunction with the exhibition Hansjürg Brunner: The Trial, this special Music and Museum concert celebrates the artistic vision of Swiss artist Brunner, a close friend of the Bechtler family. The program features music beloved by Hans and Bessie Bechtler, grandparents of cellist Tanja Bechtler, including Johann Sebastian Bach’s vibrant Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Complementing this are more esoteric works by composers such as Alan Hovhaness, Jean Sibelius, and Michael Harrison, whose mysticism, individuality, and emotional depth reflect the spiritual and existential themes found in Brunner’s art. Selections include Hovhaness’s Psalm and Fugue and Sibelius’s Impromptu. The program concludes with Kalim a contemplative and transcendent work by Harrison, whom Tanja met during his residency at the McColl Center.
During the performance Tanja Bechtler will also present a slideshow of her personal collection of jewelry designed by her godfather, Swiss artist Bernie Ilg.
TICKETS: Concert tickets are $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers, and $5 for students (with proof of ID). FREE tickets for ages 10 and under. Advance registration is required to guarantee seating.
