About the Program
The Nordic landscape is characterized by its breathtaking beauty, featuring majestic inlets, expansive forests, pristine lakes, and snow-capped mountains. Born and raised in Iceland, artist Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson creates exquisite, large-scale paintings on a loom based on the land and skies of her native country, in a practice that is deeply rooted in environmental subjects and that blurs the boundaries between abstraction and representation, painting and weaving, fine art and craft. Inspired by the exhibition Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson: Infinite Space, Sublime Horizons, the Bechtler Ensemble, led by Tanja Bechtler, pairs work by Danish composer Carl Nielsen and Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, whose music was influenced by Nordic landscapes as well. Other highlights include selections of traditional folk music from Sweden, Shetland, and Denmark.
