About the Program
Step into an immersive celebration of music and sound inspired by David McGee: The Griot and the Nightingale. Guests will experience live performances and interactive moments that invite deeper listening and creative exploration. The evening is brought to life by Black Notes Project, known for blending culture, rhythm, and community engagement. Join us for a dynamic atmosphere where art and sound come together.
We also invite you to view the exhibition, where David McGee: The Griot and the Nightingale extends the experience through three distinct playlists—reflecting the central role music has played in McGee’s life and work. These listening experiences include a personal playlist by David McGee featuring music that shaped his creative vision; a curated companion by Black Notes Project that approaches his paintings through the lens of Black musical traditions and shared aesthetic vocabularies; and Urban Dreads / Oracles, an original score by composer Chris Becker inspired by McGee’s Urban Dreads and Oracles series.
The Black Notes Project’s curated listening companion further explores the connection between Black visual art and music, framing sound as a parallel archive of history, memory, and cultural knowledge. Through thoughtful musical pairings, it places McGee’s paintings in dialogue with traditions rooted in improvisation, layering, and collective meaning-making—expanding the artwork and inviting audiences to engage with Black art as an intellectual, spiritual, and cultural system shaped by survival and imagination.
