Celebrating 10 Years
Since opening the doors on January 2, 2010, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art has hosted more than 30 modern art exhibitions, developed a diverse on- and off-site entertaining and educational programmatic calendar and served more than 300,000 people.
Over the past decade, Charlotte’s only dedicated Modern Art museum has evolved into much more than a museum. It has become a community gathering space through the development and growth of monthly programs like Jazz at the Bechtler, Bechtler By Night, Music and Museum and Modernism + Film.
And through a variety of community support, the museum has been able to fulfill a commitment to share the joy of the Bechtler collection and enrich the lives of the entire community through devoted outreach programming like Artists in Resident, Jail Arts Initiative, Low to No Vision, InReach, Museum Memories and other programs that extend programming beyond the museum walls to undeserved Charlotte communities. To date, the museum has served more than 14,000 community members through dedicated community outreach programming.
Throughout 2020, the Bechtler will showcase a mix of exhibitions and enhancements to select monthly programs to commemorate the museum’s milestone.

THE BECHTLER COLLECTION
The Bechtler collection juxtaposes whimsy with work of significant intellectual depth and historical significance. Cosmopolitan in nature yet intimate in scale, the museum provides an experience that is inspiring and approachable. The artworks were committed to the city of Charlotte by Andreas Bechtler who, along with his family, built the collection over 70 years.
