TELOS: THE FANTASTIC WORLD OF EUGENE TSUI

Thursday, June 22, The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art screens the film, Telos: The Fantastic World of Eugene Tsui during the museum's Modernism + Film series. A documentary, biography, comedy and fantasy based on an architect who struggles for recognition for his unconventional visions of the future until he finds unexpected allies in a small town where he hopes to build his architectural fantasia.

Imagine owning a home that is earthquake, fire and termite proof. Now imagine having that home rejected from society because of its appearance. Tsui fought for environmentally-minded designs before “green” and “eco-friendly” were even concepts. His main goal is to change the world, but becomes a difficult task when society views his ideas as being “beyond the norm”.

Eugene Tsui was a man of many talents; from dad, to designer, to gymnast, to architect, the film composes a fitting portrait of Tsui. By documenting the ranges of influences that impact Tsui’s life, the viewer is able to see a peak into his childhood as well as his education. While his sustainable building principles have become a trend and a necessity, his aesthetics have yet to receive mainstream approval.

PRESENTATION

Prior to the screening, a presentation will be made by Michelle George. George is an alumna from North Carolina State University with her bachelors in Environmental Design in architecture (2012) and has her Masters in Architecture from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2014). During her studies at UNC Charlotte, Michelle aided in the design, construction, and participated in the competition of the university’s Solar Decathlon project. Her primary focus on the team was the implementation of the vertical garden, which was used to amplify the exterior space into additional livable square footage for the project.
