Jazz at the Bechtler
LOCATION: LOBBY
MARCH 2
The Ziad Jazz Quartet, joined by pianist Noel Freidline, pays a special tribute to American jazz master Dave Brubeck at the March 2 Jazz at the Bechtler concert. Featured songs include Take Five, Blue Rondo a la Turk, Strange Meadowlark and In Your Own Sweet Way.
Brubeck, who modestly describes himself as “a composer who plays the piano,” has been a changing force in jazz for seven decades. The 91-year-old icon is best known for the quartet he formed with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond in 1951.
In 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded the album Time Out, featuring original songs including the hit Take Five. The record highlighted Brubeck's experiments with unusual meters and tonalities. The album remains one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and Take Five and Time Out are both in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Jazz at the Bechtler is performed from 6 to 8 p.m. in the museum lobby and is free with museum admission. Cash bar. Museum galleries are open until 9 p.m.
