Guest Lecture: High Museum of Art Director
LOCATION: WELLS FARGO AUDITORIUM
NOVEMBER 7
The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art presents a guest lecture by Michael E. Shapiro, the Director of Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, on November 7 at 6 p.m. Shapiro will take an in-depth look at the work on view in the High’s Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters exhibition.
The exhibition features more than 100 works from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and is a result of the High’s multi-year, multi-exhibition collaboration with MoMA. The fourteen artists in the exhibition―Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Constantin Brancusi, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Romare Bearden, Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns―ushered in new ways of thinking that forever transformed the artistic landscapes of Europe and the U.S. and reinvented the very idea of art.
Since joining the High’s leadership in 1995, Shapiro has overseen the reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection, developed numerous partnerships with national and international art institutions, and spearheaded the High’s 177,000 square-foot expansion by Renzo Piano that opened in 2005.
Prior to serving the High Museum of Art, Shapio was Director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He joined the St. Louis Art Museum in 1984, where he served as Chief Curator for six years. In addition, he has held the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Art at Duke University. Shapiro earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University, a Master of Arts from Williams College and a Bachelor of Arts from Hamilton College. He specializes in 19th- and 20th-century painting and sculpture.
Tickets are free for members, $10 for non-members. Purchase online, by phone at 704.353.9200 or at the visitor services desk.
